The biggest differences
Helix has a hybrid contour that is cylindrical coronally and conical apically, with a thread that changes from compressing trapezoidal at the crest to self-tapping V-shaped at the tip. Titamax is a straight cylinder with V-shaped threads on a double thread and a self-tapping apex that Neodent states needs no bone tap or contour drill. In dense bone, a tapered implant can generate more compression than is useful and its vertical position is harder to adjust, which is the reason a parallel-walled option exists.
Design
Titamax has the longer reach in the narrower diameters, offering 7, 8, 9, 11, 13, 15 and 17 mm, where Helix runs 8, 10, 11.5, 13, 16 and 18 mm. Helix goes wider, to 6.0 mm, where Titamax stops at 5.0 mm. The length grids do not line up, so an implant recorded as '13 mm Neodent' still needs its line identified.
Material and surface
Both are offered on NeoPoros, a blasted and acid-etched surface with a reported roughness of Sa 1.4 to 1.8 micrometres, and on Acqua, its hydrophilic version. Neodent instructs placement 1 to 2 mm below bone level for both, and specifies the same 60 Ncm maximum torque and 30 rpm insertion speed.
Prosthetic ecosystem
Grand Morse is a deep 16 degree Morse taper with an internal index and a 3.0 mm socket, the same on every diameter and every Grand Morse implant. Platform switching is built into the connection geometry rather than achieved by choosing a narrower abutment. Helix, Drive, Titamax and the Grand Morse zygomatic implants all restore through the same component range.
What may influence clinical selection
The genuine trade-off is between grip and control. A tapered implant finds its own stability as it seats, which is what soft bone requires and what dense bone does not need. A parallel-walled implant can be advanced or backed off to a precise depth, which is what matters in a grafted site or a dense ridge where the final position is dictated by the restoration. Neodent indications reflect that split directly.
So which is better?
Neither is universally better, and any page telling you otherwise is selling something.
These are different designs with different trade-offs, and the right choice depends on the
bone available, the position in the mouth, the planned restoration, and what the treating
clinician is equipped and experienced to place and to service years from now.
That last point is easy to overlook and matters more than most specification
differences: components need to remain obtainable for as long as the implant is in place.
