The biggest differences

TLX is a fully tapered implant in Roxolid with a transmucosal neck of 1.8 or 2.8 mm. Standard Plus is a parallel-walled implant with a fixed 1.8 mm machined neck. The deeper difference is the connection: TorcFit on TLX, synOcta on Standard Plus. TLX is not a replacement for the synOcta-based tissue-level implants — Straumann continues to sell both — and their components do not cross over.

Design

TLX reaches wider than Standard Plus, with endosteal diameters of 3.75, 4.5, 5.5 and 6.5 mm against 3.3, 4.1 and 4.8 mm. It also offers 6 mm lengths across its range, where Standard Plus reaches its shortest through a separate 4 mm Standard Plus Short product. Standard Plus, in turn, offers the 3.3 mm Narrow Neck CrossFit variant for restricted interdental space, which TLX has no equivalent of.

Prosthetic ecosystem

synOcta is an internal Morse taper with an 8 degree cone and an octagonal index for repositioning components, offered on Regular Neck and Wide Neck platforms. TorcFit on TLX is designated NT, RT and WT for shoulder diameters of 3.5, 4.8 and 6.5 mm. Because both lines are current, both component ranges remain orderable; the risk is not obsolescence but ordering from the wrong family.

What may influence clinical selection

The choice here is often driven by whether the practice wants one component system across bone-level and tissue-level cases. A practice working in BLX will find TLX shares its components; a practice with a long history of synOcta restorations may prefer to keep that continuity. Neither reasoning is about the implant performing differently in the bone, and both are legitimate.

Important limitations

Our TLX record does not include thread or apex geometry, and our Standard Plus record does not include apex geometry, because the Straumann documents we worked from do not state them. Those rows are blank in the table rather than inferred.

So which is better?

Neither is universally better, and any page telling you otherwise is selling something. These are different designs with different trade-offs, and the right choice depends on the bone available, the position in the mouth, the planned restoration, and what the treating clinician is equipped and experienced to place and to service years from now. That last point is easy to overlook and matters more than most specification differences: components need to remain obtainable for as long as the implant is in place.
