Nobel Biocare Conical Connection
Also known as: Conical Connection, Nobel CC, NobelReplace CC connection
Nobel Biocare’s internal conical implant-abutment connection, used across the NobelActive, NobelParallel CC and NobelReplace CC implant lines.
Key facts
| Manufacturer | Nobel Biocare Services AGVerified spec[1] |
|---|---|
| Connection category | Listed by Nobel Biocare as "Internal Conical Connection", the largest of the connection families in its implant catalogue.Manufacturer-reported[1] |
| Geographic availability | Nobel Biocare lists the NobelActive, NobelParallel CC, NobelReplace CC and NobelZygoma 0 degree CC implant families under its internal conical connection.Manufacturer-reported[1] |
| Platform switching | Nobel Biocare states that NobelReplace Conical Connection has "built-in platform shifting designed to increase soft-tissue volume for natural-looking esthetics".Manufacturer-reported[2] |
| Clinical evidence | A 2012 systematic review and meta-analysis of 10 randomised controlled trials (435 subjects, 993 implants) reported a mean 0.55 mm reduction in marginal bone loss for platform-switched implants compared with conventionally restored implants (95 per cent CI -0.86 to -0.24 mm, p = 0.0006), with no statistically significant difference in implant success. Subgroup analysis suggested less bone loss where the mismatch between implant and abutment diameter was larger.Verified spec[3]The authors themselves urged cautious interpretation because of heterogeneity between the trials and possible publication bias. |
| Taper angle | Manufacturer documentation not located(The Nobel Biocare pages we reached describe the connection as conical but do not state a cone angle.) |
| Anti-rotation feature | Manufacturer documentation not located(The pages we reached do not specify the indexing feature or the number of seating positions.) |
Overview
Nobel Biocare’s Conical Connection is the company’s current mainstream joint, and the naming is the main hazard around it. Nobel Biocare runs several connection families in parallel - external hex on the Branemark System, internal tri-channel on NobelSpeedy and Replace Select Tapered, this conical connection on NobelActive, NobelParallel and NobelReplace CC, and a separate tri-oval conical connection on certain zygomatic implants. Because "NobelReplace" appears in two of those families with different connections behind it, a record that says only "NobelReplace" does not identify which components will fit, and getting that wrong is a practical problem years later when a crown needs remaking. Nobel Biocare builds platform shifting into the design rather than offering it as an option, which is consistent with the broader evidence favouring a horizontal offset at the joint, though the company does not publish the cone angle on the pages we could reach.
