Straumann CrossFit

Also known as: CrossFit, CrossFit connection, RC CrossFit, NC CrossFit

Straumann’s internal connection for its Bone Level implant lines: a 15 degree conical-cylindrical friction fit with four internal grooves.

Key facts

ManufacturerInstitut Straumann AGVerified spec[1]
Connection categoryStraumann describes it as a mechanically locking friction fit of conical-cylindrical form, applying "the know-how and benefits from the Straumann synOcta Morse taper connection to the connection requirements at bone level".Manufacturer-reported[1][2]
Taper angle15 degrees, described by Straumann as a 15 degree conical-cylindrical connection.Manufacturer-reported[1]
Anti-rotation featureFour internal grooves.Manufacturer-reported[1]
Geographic availabilityStraumann states the connection is available for Bone Level implants only, in three platform sizes: Small CrossFit (SC) on 2.9 mm implants, Narrow CrossFit (NC) on 3.3 mm implants, and Regular CrossFit (RC) shared by 4.1 mm and 4.8 mm implants. The same document separately describes a Narrow Neck CrossFit (NNC) connection on the 3.3 mm Standard Plus tissue-level implant.Manufacturer-reported[1][2]Straumann’s own document states CrossFit is for Bone Level implants only and, a few paragraphs earlier, describes the Narrow Neck CrossFit connection on a tissue-level implant. NNC is a distinct platform rather than a counter-example, but the wording invites confusion and we record it rather than resolving it silently.
Predecessor systemStraumann presents CrossFit as deriving from its synOcta Morse taper connection.Manufacturer-reported[1]
Platform switchingStraumann Bone Level implants place the connection inward of the implant shoulder and carry the rough surface to the top of the implant, which produces a horizontal offset between the implant edge and the abutment of the kind platform switching describes.

Overview

CrossFit is the connection to know if you have a Straumann Bone Level or Bone Level Tapered implant, and it is a frequent source of confusion because Straumann has four connection names in circulation at once. The design logic is straightforward: take the friction-fit principle from the older tissue-level synOcta connection and rework it for an implant whose shoulder sits at bone level, where the interface is closer to the crest and the sealing demands are higher. The four internal grooves index the abutment; the 15 degree conical-cylindrical wall does the mechanical work. The practical point for patients is compatibility. CrossFit comes in three platform sizes that are not interchangeable with each other, and none of them accepts synOcta or TorcFit components. If you are having work done on an existing Straumann implant, the diameter and the connection name together determine which parts fit, and a clinic that cannot tell you both is guessing.
