Overview
synOcta is the connection on Straumann’s classic tissue-level implants, and it is the oldest of the company’s current designs - introduced in 1999, on a taper principle Straumann dates to 1986. It is the ancestor of CrossFit, which Straumann says applied the same friction-fit thinking to bone-level implants, and understanding that lineage is the quickest way to keep the two apart. The design is also a good illustration of how a tissue-level implant solves the crestal bone problem: rather than shifting the joint horizontally inward as platform switching does, it lifts the joint vertically clear of the bone on a polished collar, so the microgap is simply not adjacent to bone in the first place. For patients, the relevance is usually retrospective. A great many Straumann implants placed between 1999 and the mid-2010s carry this connection, and its components remain available, which is why an older Straumann implant is generally restorable rather than orphaned.
