Overview
Three lobes instead of six flats is an unusual choice, and it exists for a handling reason as much as a mechanical one. Three positions are easy to feel: the abutment drops in, rotates a fraction and seats, whereas a six-position hexagon at the back of a mouth can be fiddly to find. Nobel Biocare’s surgical instructions build on that by asking the clinician to place one lobe in the buccal position, which makes the orientation of every subsequent component predictable from the implant’s position alone. The connection is closely identified with the NobelReplace family, and it is the geometry a UK patient is most likely to encounter in records from the 2000s. It is also, importantly, not interchangeable with Nobel Biocare’s conical connection, which the company lists as a separate family carrying different implants - a NobelReplace Conical Connection implant and a Replace Select Tapered implant do not take the same abutments, despite the closely related names.
