Overview

Bicon is the clearest outlier among mainstream implant systems, because it has no abutment screw at all: the abutment is seated into a 1.5° taper and held by friction, which is why Bicon talks about a microgap measured in fractions of a micron rather than about screw preload. The body is plateaued rather than threaded, and the shoulder slopes inward so bone can sit over the top of the implant. These two features together are the basis of the system’s emphasis on short implants, since anchorage comes from the plateau surface area rather than from length. The trade-off worth understanding is practical rather than biological: because the connection is proprietary and screwless, retrieving or replacing a restoration follows a different procedure from the screw-retained systems most clinicians use, and a dentist unfamiliar with Bicon may need to refer.
