ISO 14801 — Dynamic loading test for endosseous dental implants

The fatigue test specific to dental implants: a specimen is loaded off-axis at 30 degrees and cycled, commonly to five million cycles, to establish the load it survives without fracture.

What it means in practice
This is the closest thing the implant industry has to a standardised mechanical performance test, and it is the one worth asking about for a narrow-diameter or one-piece implant where strength genuinely constrains the design. Its value is that everyone runs the same test, so the numbers are comparable in a way that marketing language is not. Its limit is equally important: it is a metal specimen in a holder in a laboratory, loaded at a fixed angle. It does not model bone quality, infection, oral hygiene, or a patient who grinds their teeth, and a high fatigue figure is not a prediction of how long an implant will last in a mouth.
