Overview
XPEED belongs to a third strategy for modifying an implant surface, distinct from both roughening and from making a surface hydrophilic: it changes what the surface is made of, growing a thin calcium titanate layer on the titanium so the outermost atoms include calcium. The published process is unusually specific for a commercial surface - a defined temperature and duration in a calcium solution - which is one reason this record can be sourced to peer-reviewed work rather than to a brochure. The important limitation is that the supporting evidence we have verified is laboratory and animal evidence. Higher bone-to-implant contact in a rabbit is a real result and a reasonable basis for developing a product, but it is a different kind of claim from a survival rate in patients, and the two should not be presented to a patient as if they were interchangeable. MegaGen implants are common in Turkish and Korean clinics, so UK patients travelling abroad encounter this surface fairly often.
