OsseoSpeed

Also known as: OsseoSpeed surface, Fluoride-modified TiO2-blasted surface, OsseoSpeed EV

Dentsply Sirona’s fluoride-modified, grit-blasted titanium implant surface, used on the Astra Tech, PrimeTaper and OmniTaper implant systems.

Key facts

ManufacturerDentsply SironaVerified spec[1]
Production processDescribed by Dentsply Sirona as "a moderately rough implant surface derived from a grit blasted titanium surface (TiOblast) with an additional chemical treatment", whose characteristics "show incorporation of small amounts of fluoride ions into the titanium oxide layer, a distinct microscale pattern and a unique topography".Manufacturer-reported[1]
Surface categoryDescribed by Dentsply Sirona as a moderately rough surface.Manufacturer-reported[1]
Predecessor systemDentsply Sirona names TiOblast, a grit-blasted titanium surface, and machined titanium as its ancestors.Manufacturer-reported[1]
Geographic availabilityIntroduced on implants in the Astra Tech Implant System in 2004, in the PrimeTaper Implant System in 2021 and in the OmniTaper Implant System in 2022.Manufacturer-reported[1]
Surface roughnessManufacturer documentation not located(Dentsply Sirona classes the surface as moderately rough but the scientific review we read does not state an Sa value.)
Clinical evidenceDentsply Sirona’s scientific review reports that animal studies have shown similar or increased bone formation and stronger bone-implant contact compared with its TiOblast and machined predecessors at shorter healing times, and states this is supported by human histology and clinical studies.Manufacturer-reported[1]The review itself carries the caveat that results from animal models may not translate to clinical results in humans.

Overview

OsseoSpeed is the surface most often meant when someone refers to an "Astra" implant, and its distinguishing feature is chemical rather than mechanical: fluoride ions are incorporated into the titanium oxide layer of an already grit-blasted surface. That makes it a member of the same broad club as the hydrophilic surfaces - a conventional roughened topography with a chemical step added - but by a different chemistry from Straumann’s or Osstem’s. It is also one of the better-documented surfaces in the field, though the documentation is largely gathered and presented by the manufacturer, and Dentsply Sirona itself flags that a substantial part of it is animal work. Patients comparing quotes should note that the surface now spans three separate implant systems introduced nearly two decades apart, so knowing that an implant carries OsseoSpeed does not by itself identify which system was used, which matters when future components need to be matched.
