Does the brand actually matter?
Patients often fixate on the implant brand, but the honest picture is more nuanced. Every major branded system is rigorously tested and clinically reliable. The brand influences the depth of research behind it, the range of components available for tricky cases, the implant surface technology, and the price. It does not override the two things that decide most outcomes: the clinician's experience and your own healing. A premium implant placed poorly will do worse than a value implant placed expertly. That said, knowing your clinic uses an established, documented brand — and which one — is an important quality signal.
The major brands at a glance
Straumann
Premium · SwitzerlandThe most researched implant system in the world, with the SLActive surface for faster, predictable osseointegration. Often the benchmark premium choice; the Roxolid titanium-zirconium alloy allows smaller-diameter implants.
Nobel Biocare
Premium · Sweden / SwitzerlandPioneer of modern osseointegration and the original All-on-4 protocol. NobelActive and NobelParallel systems are widely used for immediate-loading and full-arch cases with strong long-term data.
BioHorizons
Upper-mid · USAStrong evidence base with the Laser-Lok surface designed to encourage soft-tissue and bone attachment. A respected option offering premium performance at a slightly lower price point.
Bicon
Specialist · USADistinctive short-implant system with a sloping-shoulder design and an integrated locking-taper abutment connection (no screw). Useful where bone height is limited; its design is discussed in detail on our Bicon reference page.
Osstem
Value · South KoreaThe largest implant manufacturer in Asia and one of the most-placed systems worldwide. Offers reliable, well-documented implants at a more accessible price, which is why many high-volume clinics use it.
Premium versus value — what you pay for
The price difference between a premium and a value implant largely reflects research investment, surface technology and the breadth of the component system, rather than a dramatic gap in everyday success rates. For straightforward single-tooth cases, a well-placed value-tier implant performs excellently. For full-arch, immediate-loading or aesthetically demanding cases, the premium systems' track record and component flexibility can be worth the extra. A trustworthy clinic will recommend a brand appropriate to your case and explain the choice rather than defaulting to the cheapest stock.
What to verify with any clinic
- Named brand and model — ask exactly which implant system will be used.
- An implant passport — a document recording the brand, model and reference numbers, so any dentist worldwide can service it later.
- A written guarantee on the implant and the work.
- Consistency — premium clinics do not switch you to an unbranded implant on the day.
Clinics such as Taki Dent use premium Straumann and Nobel Biocare systems, provide an implant passport, and back treatment with a five-year written guarantee — exactly the transparency this checklist is looking for. For the Bicon system specifically, including the design context behind its failure profile, see our dedicated Bicon implants reference. Next: what implants actually cost.
