BioHorizons Tapered Internal

Also known as: Tapered Internal, BioHorizons Tapered Internal Implant

A BioHorizons tapered implant with a conical internal hex connection and a Laser-Lok collar, sold alongside the newer Tapered Pro within the same prosthetic family.

Quick facts

Current statusCurrent. BioHorizons lists Tapered Internal on its product site and includes it among the mount-free implants named in the Tapered Pro catalogue.Manufacturer-reported[1][2]
Implant levelBone level. BioHorizons gives the placement of Tapered Internal as “bone level” on its own product page, and the Tapered HD catalogue keeps Tapered Internal separate from the Tapered Tissue Level implant, which is the one described as having “a transmucosal collar for one stage procedures”.Manufacturer-reported[1][3]
Body geometryTapered body, supplied mount-free.Manufacturer-reported[2]
Thread designManufacturer documentation not located(BioHorizons describes buttress threads across the Tapered family but the pages reviewed do not give a Tapered Internal thread specification separately.)

MaterialTitanium alloy Ti-6Al-4V ELI.Manufacturer-reported[3]Stated on the Tapered Internal pages of the Tapered HD catalogue for both the mount-free implant and the pre-mounted 3inOne version.
SurfaceLaser-Lok collar; BioHorizons markets Laser-Lok across the Tapered family.Manufacturer-reported[1][2]
ConnectionConical internal hex, colour-coded by prosthetic platform.Manufacturer-reported[1]
Platform switchingBioHorizons contrasts Tapered Pro and Tapered Internal in its platform-switching illustration, indicating the two differ in collar diameter relative to platform.Manufacturer-reported[2]
Available diametersBody diameter ∅ 3.0, 3.4, 3.8, 4.6 and 5.8 mm, carrying prosthetic connections of ∅ 3.0, 3.0, 3.5, 4.5 and 5.7 mm respectively. Apical diameter ∅ 2.0, 2.4, 2.8, 3.1 and 3.9 mm on the same order.Manufacturer-reported[3][1]The pre-mounted 3inOne version of Tapered Internal is offered only in ∅ 3.8, 4.6 and 5.8 mm. BioHorizons states that not every diameter and length configuration is available, and availability differs by market.
Available lengths7.5, 9.0, 10.5, 12.0, 15.0 and 18.0 mm. Not every length is offered in every diameter: 7.5 mm only in ∅ 4.6 and 5.8 mm; 9.0 mm only in ∅ 3.4, 3.8, 4.6 and 5.8 mm; 18.0 mm only in ∅ 3.4, 3.8 and 4.6 mm. The ∅ 3.0 mm body is offered in 10.5, 12.0 and 15.0 mm only.Manufacturer-reported[3][1]Read from the TLX item-code table in the Tapered HD catalogue; availability differs by market.

Overview

Tapered Internal is BioHorizons’ longer-standing tapered implant and remains available alongside Tapered Pro, which is what makes the pair confusing: they share the conical internal hex connection and the Laser-Lok collar, but differ in collar geometry and in how much the platform is switched relative to the body. BioHorizons itself illustrates the two side by side when explaining platform switching, which is a fair indication that the distinction is a design refinement rather than a change of system. Diameters and lengths are now recorded from the Tapered HD surgical catalogue rather than the product page, including the gaps: 7.5 mm exists only on the wider bodies and 18.0 mm only on the middle three, which are literal blanks in the manufacturer’s item-code grid rather than something we inferred. Configurations still vary by market, so confirm availability before ordering. For anyone restoring an existing implant, the practical point is that connection compatibility across the Tapered family is generally good, but collar height and platform diameter still have to be identified correctly.

The clearances below are held by BioHorizons at brand level and cover its implant range, not BioHorizons Tapered Internal specifically. We show them here because that is the level at which regulators actually issue them.

Regulatory record

Read this before drawing conclusions. A clearance or certificate means a device may legally be sold in a market. It is not a finding that the implant performs well, and it is not a comparison against other implants. In particular, FDA "clearance" is not FDA "approval" — clearance means the FDA accepted the device as substantially equivalent to one already on the market. What these actually mean →

FDA 510(k) clearance12 records

Cleared as substantially equivalent to a predicate device. Not an FDA approval, and not a finding of safety or effectiveness.

Clearance records for BioHorizons were retrieved from the issuing authority's own database, not from the manufacturer's marketing material. We attribute a clearance to a brand only when the filing holder belongs to that brand's corporate family — third-party clearances for compatible components are excluded, because they belong to the company that made the component, not to BioHorizons.
