BioHorizons Tapered Pro

Also known as: Tapered Pro, BioHorizons Tapered Pro Implant

A BioHorizons tapered implant in Ti-6Al-4V ELI alloy with buttress threads, a Laser-Lok collar over a resorbable blast textured body, and a platform-switched conical internal hex connection.

Quick facts

Current statusCurrent. BioHorizons publishes a Tapered Pro catalogue and surgical manual and lists the implant on its product site.Manufacturer-reported[1][2]
Implant levelManufacturer documentation not located(BioHorizons describes a reduced collar diameter and a 1.8 mm Laser-Lok zone but does not classify the implant as bone level or tissue level; a separate Tapered Tissue Level product exists in the same family.)
Body geometryAnatomically tapered body with a reduced collar diameter, which BioHorizons states minimises stress on cortical bone and removes the need for crestal bone drills. Supplied mount-free with a cover cap.Manufacturer-reported[1]
Thread designDeep, self-tapping buttress threads with helical cutting flutes, which BioHorizons states give progressive insertion torque and disperse bone chips.Manufacturer-reported[1]
Apex designEnd-cutting, self-tapping design. Apical diameter ∅ 2.8, 3.0, 3.2 and 3.3 mm for the ∅ 3.8, 4.2, 4.6 and 5.2 mm bodies respectively.Manufacturer-reported[1]
MaterialTitanium alloy Ti-6Al-4V ELI.Manufacturer-reported[1]
SurfaceLaser-Lok collar over a body with Resorbable Blast Texturing (RBT). The Laser-Lok zone is 1.8 mm on every diameter.Manufacturer-reported[1]
ConnectionConical internal hex, which BioHorizons states provides a rigid connection and a stable biological seal.Manufacturer-reported[1][2]
Platform switchingPlatform-switched throughout: a ∅ 3.0 mm prosthetic connection on the ∅ 3.8 mm body, ∅ 3.5 mm on the ∅ 4.2 mm and ∅ 4.6 mm bodies, and ∅ 4.5 mm on the ∅ 5.2 mm body.Manufacturer-reported[1]
Available diametersBody diameter ∅ 3.8, 4.2, 4.6 and 5.2 mm.Manufacturer-reported[1]
Available lengths9.0, 10.5, 12.0, 15.0 and 18.0 mm. The 18.0 mm length is not offered in the ∅ 5.2 mm body.Manufacturer-reported[1]

Overview

Tapered Pro is the implant BioHorizons builds its Laser-Lok story around: a 1.8 mm band of laser-machined microchannels at the collar, sitting above a body given a resorbable blast texture. The claim attached to that band is a connective tissue attachment rather than simply osseointegration, which is a different assertion from the surface roughness claims made for most competitors and should be assessed on its own evidence. Structurally the implant is platform-switched by design — a ∅ 5.2 mm body carries a ∅ 4.5 mm connection — so the abutment is always narrower than the fixture. It is worth knowing that the surrounding family is deliberately modular: short, narrow and immediate-molar cases are handled by separate product lines (Tapered Short, Tapered 3.0, Tapered IM) rather than by extending the Tapered Pro size range.

Clinical positioning

What the manufacturer says this system is designed for. This is not the same thing as independent clinical evidence, which is set out separately below.

BioHorizons describes Tapered Pro as intended for immediate treatment and for controlled placement in challenging sites.Manufacturer-reported

Further detail

Short implant optionShort lengths are covered by a separate Tapered Short product at 6.0 mm and 7.5 mm in ∅ 4.6 mm and ∅ 5.8 mm bodies, rather than within the Tapered Pro range itself.Manufacturer-reported[1]
Narrow implant optionNarrow sites are covered by the separate Tapered 3.0 line, offering ∅ 3.0 mm and ∅ 3.4 mm bodies on a ∅ 3.0 mm prosthetic connection.Manufacturer-reported[1]

The clearances below are held by BioHorizons at brand level and cover its implant range, not BioHorizons Tapered Pro specifically. We show them here because that is the level at which regulators actually issue them.

Regulatory record

Read this before drawing conclusions. A clearance or certificate means a device may legally be sold in a market. It is not a finding that the implant performs well, and it is not a comparison against other implants. In particular, FDA "clearance" is not FDA "approval" — clearance means the FDA accepted the device as substantially equivalent to one already on the market. What these actually mean →

FDA 510(k) clearance12 records

Cleared as substantially equivalent to a predicate device. Not an FDA approval, and not a finding of safety or effectiveness.

Clearance records for BioHorizons were retrieved from the issuing authority's own database, not from the manufacturer's marketing material. We attribute a clearance to a brand only when the filing holder belongs to that brand's corporate family — third-party clearances for compatible components are excluded, because they belong to the company that made the component, not to BioHorizons.
