NobelActive

Also known as: NobelActive TiUltra, Nobel Biocare NobelActive

A tapered implant from Nobel Biocare with an expanding tapered body, double-lead thread and reverse cutting blades, supplied with an internal conical connection and the TiUltra or TiUnite surface.

Quick facts

Current statusCurrent. NobelActive is listed in the Nobel Biocare implant catalogue with 56 options.Manufacturer-reported[1][2]
Implant levelInsufficient evidence(Checked the NobelActive TiUnite/TiUltra instructions for use (IFU1001 000 05) and the two conical connection product overviews (86168B and 81657F) in addition to the Nobel Biocare product page. None of them uses the words "bone level" or "tissue level" about NobelActive; the IFU describes it only as an endosseous threaded implant. Nobel Biocare states elsewhere that it offers both bone- and tissue-level implants but does not assign NobelActive to either category in the documents reviewed.)
Body geometryExpanding tapered body which Nobel Biocare states condenses bone gradually during insertion, with reverse cutting blades that allow the implant position to be adjusted during placement.Manufacturer-reported[2]
Thread designDouble-lead thread, which Nobel Biocare states engages the osteotomy faster than a single-lead thread.Manufacturer-reported[2]
Apex designSharp cutting blades at the apex, which Nobel Biocare states allow under-preparation of the surgical site.Manufacturer-reported[2]
MaterialCommercially pure titanium grade 4. The instructions for use give the composition as titanium balanced with max. 0.50 wt.% iron, max. 0.40 wt.% oxygen, max. 0.08 wt.% carbon, max. 0.05 wt.% nitrogen and max. 0.015 wt.% hydrogen, and state that the TiUltra variant is additionally layered with a water-soluble salt mixture of sodium dihydrogen phosphate and magnesium chloride. The co-packed cover screw is Ti-6Al-4V ELI alloy.Manufacturer-reported[3]
SurfaceTiUltra, introduced in 2019; also offered historically with the TiUnite surface.Manufacturer-reported[2]
ConnectionInternal conical connection. Nobel Biocare groups NobelActive under the "Internal Conical Connection" filter in its implant catalogue.Manufacturer-reported[1][4]
Platform switchingNobel Biocare describes "enhanced platform shifting" for the NobelActive S variant but publishes no dimension for it on the pages reviewed.Manufacturer-reported[2]
Available diametersNobelActive TiUltra is catalogued in ∅ 3.0, 3.5, 4.3, 5.0 and 5.5 mm.Manufacturer-reported[4]
Available lengths∅ 3.0 mm: 10–13 mm. ∅ 3.5, 4.3 and 5.0 mm: 8.5–18 mm. ∅ 5.5 mm: 7–15 mm. Nobel Biocare notes that the actual implant length is 0.5 mm shorter than the length in the product name.Manufacturer-reported[4]

Overview

NobelActive is the aggressive end of Nobel Biocare’s range: an expanding tapered body with a double-lead thread and cutting blades at the apex, designed so the site can be deliberately under-prepared and the implant gains stability as it is driven in. The reverse cutting blades are the unusual part, because they allow an experienced surgeon to back the implant out and re-orient it during placement rather than committing to the first path. Its natural comparison within the same brand is NobelParallel Conical Connection, which shares the connection and surface but has a parallel-walled body — the choice between them is about bone quality and placement protocol, not about one being a better product. Note that the catalogue length in the product name is 0.5 mm longer than the implant actually measures, a detail that surprises people reading Nobel’s tables for the first time.

Clinical positioning

What the manufacturer says this system is designed for. This is not the same thing as independent clinical evidence, which is set out separately below.

Nobel Biocare describes NobelActive as particularly suitable for more demanding situations requiring immediate implant placement or immediate function, including soft bone, extraction sockets and aesthetic regions.Manufacturer-reported

The clearances below are held by Nobel Biocare at brand level and cover its implant range, not NobelActive specifically. We show them here because that is the level at which regulators actually issue them.

Regulatory record

Read this before drawing conclusions. A clearance or certificate means a device may legally be sold in a market. It is not a finding that the implant performs well, and it is not a comparison against other implants. In particular, FDA "clearance" is not FDA "approval" — clearance means the FDA accepted the device as substantially equivalent to one already on the market. What these actually mean →

Clearance records for Nobel Biocare were retrieved from the issuing authority's own database, not from the manufacturer's marketing material. We attribute a clearance to a brand only when the filing holder belongs to that brand's corporate family — third-party clearances for compatible components are excluded, because they belong to the company that made the component, not to Nobel Biocare.
